July 11, 2007- Zebby gets sick
I got a call at around 1:00 in the afternoon that
Zebby had minor signs of colic and dehydration. It was a hot day and
I thought nothing of it. I went to the ranch and tried my best to
hydrate him. Audrey, Kacie and Michelle were a great help and tried
to get him better. Surprisingly by around 6pm he sill wasn't any
better. So I thought it would be best to call a vet out to check him
out. All the vets in the area were busy but at around 9:30 p.m. Dr.
Sara Clark of ECLAP finally was able to come out. It did not look
good. It just got worse by the minute. She suspected either a
stone or a blockage and we would need to make a decision fast... surgery
or put him down. I wanted to give him the surgery he needed oh so
bad... but financially it was no possible... it can cost 5, 10, or even
$20,000. I had $1,500 that I could spend and I was willing to use it
all just to give him a chance. At around midnight, Zebby, my husband
Dave and I drove up to Helen Woodward to meet with Dr. Vasquez. He
was such a warm, genuine character and I felt blessed that I had such a
caring doctor. We took x-rays of his intestines and it wasn't
good. He had a large impaction of sand in his intestine. Dr.
Vasquez was honest and said it wasn't going to go away on its own and he
would need surgery. He asked me if this was an option and I had to
say no, that we didn't have the money. I asked him not to give up
and that I had $1,100 to give him to put towards giving him a
chance. I didn't want to put him down that night it just didn't feel
right. He agreed and said he would do his best.
That night after we left the hospital at 2 a.m.
it was tears all night long. I didn't know what to do, but I knew
what I had to do. Surgery felt so right and yet so far away from our
finances. I knew I couldn't do anything and so I did the only thing
I could do, put it in God's hands. It was His will and is always His
way... Dave and I prayed all night long for help... He helped soothe my
pain. As morning came I woke up at around 6:00 with only 3 hours of
sleep and again prayed for help. I couldn't stop crying that morning and
finally I received a phone call at around 7:00 from Dr. Vasquez he had
news for me... Zebby was doing a lot worse and he could barely keep him
comfortable all night long... but he was GOING IN FOR SURGERY, an
anonymous woman had donated the money for his surgery....I couldn't
believe what I was hearing. My heart stopped, I fell to my knees and I
couldn't stop crying my tears of joy. The Dr. said people never
anonymously donate money for a surgery... in all the years he had been
doing surgeries it had never happened! I got off the phone with Dr.
Vasquez still on my knees and thanked the Lord profusely. He had
sent me an angel.
Zebby went in for a successful surgery that
morning...to find a ligament wrapped around his colon and sand in his
intestine. He would have never survived without the surgery.
Friends, family and students came up to Helen
Woodward that morning and supported Zebby all day. Thank you Janet, Dave,
Audrey, Janna, Kacie, and Vida for being there for Zebby and I...
July 19, 2007- Zebby Came Home
